Background of the Study

Adolescent pregnancy remains a significant public health concern globally, with profound implications for the educational and health outcomes of young mothers. In Nigeria, adolescent pregnancy is prevalent, with estimates indicating that approximately 23% of girls aged 15-19 have given birth (Fagbamigbe et al., 2024). In Nasarawa State, located in north-central Nigeria, the rate of adolescent pregnancy has been rising, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas, where cultural practices and lack of access to reproductive health education contribute to early marriages and pregnancies (Ibrahim et al., 2023).

Adolescent pregnancy often leads to significant disruptions in a young woman's life, primarily affecting her educational aspirations and long-term economic prospects. Early pregnancies result in school dropout for many adolescent girls, as their ability to continue with education becomes hindered due to the physical demands of pregnancy, social stigma, and financial constraints (Adewale et al., 2023). In Nasarawa State, where access to secondary education and healthcare services is limited in some areas, the consequences of adolescent pregnancy are more pronounced, as young mothers may not return to school after childbirth.

The health outcomes for adolescent mothers and their children are also concerning. Pregnant adolescents are at higher risk of experiencing complications during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, such as eclampsia, obstructed labor, and preterm birth. These risks are compounded by limited access to quality healthcare services in rural areas of Nasarawa State (Okeke et al., 2024). Furthermore, children born to adolescent mothers are more likely to experience health challenges, including low birth weight, malnutrition, and developmental delays. The intergenerational effects of adolescent pregnancy thus create a cycle of poverty, poor education, and limited health outcomes.

Given the implications of adolescent pregnancy on school dropout rates and health outcomes, this study seeks to investigate how adolescent pregnancy influences these two critical aspects in Nasarawa State and to provide insights that could inform policies aimed at mitigating its effects.

Statement of the Problem

Adolescent pregnancy continues to contribute to high school dropout rates and adverse health outcomes for both the young mothers and their children in Nasarawa State. Despite efforts by the Nigerian government and various organizations to reduce adolescent pregnancy, cultural factors, lack of comprehensive sex education, and limited access to reproductive health services continue to perpetuate the problem (Aliyu et al., 2023). The lack of adequate support systems for adolescent mothers, including educational re-entry programs and healthcare services, further exacerbates the negative effects on both educational and health outcomes.

There is a need to investigate the extent of these challenges in Nasarawa State, particularly in rural areas, and understand how adolescent pregnancy impacts the educational trajectory and health of young mothers. Without this knowledge, policymakers may struggle to develop effective interventions to address the multifaceted consequences of adolescent pregnancy.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the impact of adolescent pregnancy on school dropout rates in Nasarawa State.

2. To evaluate the health outcomes associated with adolescent pregnancy for both the young mothers and their children in Nasarawa State.

3. To recommend strategies for reducing adolescent pregnancy and its negative effects on education and health in Nasarawa State.

Research Questions

1. How does adolescent pregnancy contribute to school dropout rates in Nasarawa State?

2. What are the health outcomes for adolescent mothers and their children in Nasarawa State?

3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce adolescent pregnancy and mitigate its impact on education and health in Nasarawa State?

Research Hypotheses

1. There is a significant relationship between adolescent pregnancy and school dropout rates in Nasarawa State.

2. Adolescent pregnancy is associated with higher rates of maternal and child health complications in Nasarawa State.

3. Educational re-entry programs for adolescent mothers significantly reduce school dropout rates in Nasarawa State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on adolescent girls who have experienced pregnancy in Nasarawa State, including both urban and rural populations. The research will assess the rates of school dropout and the health outcomes of adolescent mothers and their children. Limitations may include challenges in accessing a representative sample of adolescent mothers, potential social stigma affecting the willingness of participants to share personal information, and the limited availability of comprehensive health data on adolescent pregnancies in the region.
